Hello everyone,

We've got a really exciting project for the 2010 UK elections which basically involves getting people in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Ghana voting (how, you ask? we will send all details).

The system is going to work through FrontlineSMS and Drupal so we're trying to get hold of someone who has free time very soon (Jan 2010) to start working on it.

If this is the kind of interesting (and slightly subversive) project that might interest you please drop me an email.

Please get in touch by emailing jamessadri [at] gmail.com

Cheers,

James

Why?

This doesn't sound very constructive. Why would you want people in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Ghana to vote (I'm assuming it will be a "fantasy" vote) in the UK elections?

Do they pay taxes in the UK?

Ex-Pats?

That was the first thing that crossed my mind when I read it.

Sorry, just saw your

Sorry, just saw your replies.

They don't pay taxes and they are not expats.

But they are directly affected by UK policies on conflict, climate and trade.

There are 9,000 UK soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. While there is much discussion in the UK about whether or not to withdraw those troops, the voices of Afghans are unheard in that debate.

Bangladesh is on the frontline of climate change, with scientists estimating that rising sea levels could displace 15 million people by 2050. As the 8th largest emitter of carbon, the UK plays a key role in climate change.

Despite being one of Africa's strongest democracies, many of the decisions affecting Ghana are taken outside the country. Trade rules and conditions set by the IMF and World Bank impact Ghana significantly. As one of the World Bank's five largest shareholders the UK has a large say in shaping trade rules in Africa.

Should policies be accountable to people they affect? Is that not democracy?

That's what we're asking.
