New Drupal Pro Development book available on Amazon UK

Since yesterday I think.

To support the Drupal community, buy it via the Drupal book website.

NB This has already sold out on the US site...

Confirmed.

Mine got delivered yesterday, despite the fact that the day before, they told me I wasn't going to get it until the end of May! :p

E-book

If you can't wait for delivery (or if  it's more convenient) you can download the book from the website of Apress, the publisher. Go to:

www.apress.com/book/bookDisplay.html?bID=10258

If you've already bought the book you can get the e-book version at a discount (see inside back cover).

I bought it, but i haven't

I bought it, but i haven't read much. It looks pretty good because it explains Drupal in high level, rather than just providing bits and pieces of sample codes.

What amazed me was that the author (VanDyk) was not a full-time Drupaller, but actually an entomologist and Drupal is his hobby.

he's not the only one

I remember when Robert introduced me to Dries at Drupalcon last year, I told Dries I only do Drupal in my spare time, and he replied "So do I".

Yeah, some people are

Yeah, some people are smarter / more bionic than I can ever hope to be.

Book Costs

I have been keeping my eye open for the release of this book.

But I am amazed at the wide range of price this book is being offered at:

APRESS website list it at $44 which is about £22 at the moment

Amazon have it at £30.99

Computer Manuals have it at £24.79

I shall be ordering mine soon but not sure where from as yet.

ebooks even cheaper and greener

I bought the ebook for $22.50 which will probably cost me around £12.

ebooks may not be everyones cup of tea but they are easier to search, oh and the wife doesn't see that I've bought another book.... ;-)

maybe useful for those on a budget.

It wasn't that expensive last week!

I guess amazon must be subject to laws of supply and demand or something...!

Can't recommend it highly enough. Possibly a bit noddy for a ****-hot PHP pro but it's pitched just right for someone like me who is no longer scared of PHP but hasn't quite worked out how various key bits of Drupal work - e.g. menu system (loads here I'd not come across before), login process, security, etc. etc.

Only 2 things it could do better:

  • shout api.drupal.org louder and more often
  • while it has good descriptions of what happens during cached page requests it lacks a complete description of how a non-cached page is generated, what the key function calls are etc. etc. and could do with a good picture of all this. Guess I'll just have to dive into the code :-P or indulge in my least favourite passion - trying to find stuff on drupal.org. It's like watching paint dry ...!
