Practical Drupal for Small NGOs

[28/Oct/09 The first event will take place on Friday the 6th, November 2009!]
[8/Oct/09 - We have received 10 applications so although we keep accepting applications, we cannot support new applicants immediately. But your application will be in queue so please submit your application using the form below!]
[1/Oct/09 - added new roles. also changed the visibility setting so this post is visible in all groups. Some people based outside of London are interested in attending so why not!]
I have been fascinated by the idea and underlying ethos of Drupal for NGOs initiated by Rob Purdie. The group has had a number of meetups but it seems to me it hasn't yielded much collaborations or exciting projects yet, which doesn't keep my heart dancing. I like things that are practical. I want to see things actually happening and rapidly. I'm not a noble thinker as Rob or don't I have brilliant communication and coordination skills like him to facilitate collaborations of large international NGOs. But I have hands-on experience and knowledge to build Drupal websites quickly, which would come handy when helping small NGOs. From a plain website to forums, intranets / extranets or SNS, we know we can do it with Drupal quickly. So my plan is to start regular meetups dedicated to help small NGOs build and maintain their websites. This includes:
  • consultation
  • information architecture
  • design (probably just the banner and not the whole theme)
  • site building
  • maintenance
  • directing them to resources e.g. Drupal forums and IRC channels
I would like to make it clear that I don't want to make this event into something like Social Innovation Camp in which geeks get together and build websites over one weekend. Don't get me wrong though - I absolutely love the idea of SI Camp and think it's an amazing project that I admire all the people involved in realising their events. However, when it comes to sustainability it seems to be rather poor and I think applying the same model simply would not work for this. I've taken part in SI Camp twice as a Drupaller (of course) and it was an amazing experience. But I was sad to see the participants' enthusiasm withering away rather quickly after the event. When it comes to building organisational websites, maintenance (including iterative improvements and security updates) is more important than building a website that impresses first-time visitors for 2 minutes. Therefore I wouldn't like to make this event into a competition or an intense 2-day event with no maintenance support. But if you want to do it that way, nothing will stop you. Please go ahead and organise a separate event yourself :) What we need In order to make the event happen, we need:
People who are capable of helping any aspect of web development, includeing:
  • web consultants
  • content developers
  • designers
  • Drupal developers
  • instructors
  • documentation writers
  • (If no one is up for it, I can still provide everything except for content development and graphic design) Any resource that would help the event happen / make the event better
  • Venue: We can use the Royal Festival Hall, which is a nice venue and free. But if anyone can offer a venue with a decent internet connection and nice atomsphere, that will be brilliant!
  • Sponsors to provide some drinks and nibbles. But this is more of a nice-to-have and I would probably bring some drinks and nibbles anyway.
  • A server or two to get the organisations' sites up and running.
  • I also find it reasonable to ask the NGOs to pay a small but reasonable fee for this. I can provide my slice for this as well.
What I expect from organisations If you are planning to get help from us, I would expect the organisations to:
  • be willing to learn Drupal and maintain the site themselves (get your hands dirty too. Don't expect others to do everything for you!)
  • support Drupal in whatever the way they can (sharing knowledge by helping with documentation at drupal.org, helping others in forums, promoting Drupal)
  • utilise this opportunity as much as possible. If you are an organisation that train young people to help them find jobs, why don't you use this event as an opportunity for youths to learn how to build websites? You can get them trained and get your site built/maintained at the same time :)
What now? I'm planning to start this meetup from November somewhere in Central London. If you are interested in helping, please let me know how you would like to help by leaving a comment. If you are an NGO and would like to get help from us, please use the form below to let me know who you are, what you do and what kind of website you need. Looking forward to hearing from you all!
Let us know what kind of website you are after e.g. brochure website, intranet, forum etc. Don't provide too much details e.g. a site map, as your visions and plans usually change as you move on.

Yes!

Definitely up for this - let's find a venue.

NGO to assist

Community, I was, initially thinking of our very own NGO but I have received this email and i feel that this might be a more needy case than mine; ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: jane kuster Date: Mon, Sep 28, 2009 at 6:38 PM Subject: Fwd: Peace Corps Volunteer To: patrick omari Cc: jessicarawley , Grace Elvik Hi Pat! Thanks for the prompt reply! I hope you will get time to put up the website soon, though we want to change the logo and are looking for a designer to assist design a better one than we have. Am sending the old one to you now incase you can find someone to do it, the others we requested are still to come through for us and anyway it wouldn't hurt to have a selection top choose from. Asante! Regards, Jane. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jessica Rawley Date: Wed, 9 Sep 2009 16:13:28 +0300 Subject: Peace Corps Volunteer To: proposals@mindfulinteractive.com Cc: Jane Kamau-Kuster , SHAPE Africa Hello :) My name is Jesica and I’m currently serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya. Another volunteer, Harmony Hartbauer, gave me your information to request some technical assistance. The secondary project I work on is a small org called SHAPE Africa which deals mostly with child, youth and women’s education and skill training. The org has just recently stepped up from being a CBO to an NGO and we’re interested in updating it’s image a bit. The Director is working with a contact in the UK on building a website, but we also need a new logo and I thought I’d email you all for help. I wasn’t sure if that’s something you do or not, but I thought I’d ask. If you can help us out, we’d most appreciate! I've attached the old letterhead and logo here for reference. Thanks so much :) - Jes -- Jessica Rawley Eco-Tourism Promotion Officer US Peace Corps Nature Kenya, Gede M: +254 (0) 727-975-15 Connecting Nature & People

count me in

I'd be interested in helping out from the perspective of a developer with a bit of drupal experience under my belt

Sounds Good

I'm new to Drupal but have pretty extensive web design/development/consultancy skills and experience. This sounds like a great idea and I'd be up for helping out if I can be of use.

Practical Drupal for Small NGOs

Great idea. I'd be more than interested in contributing to this. We have just completed our first Drupal NGO site and would be pretty eager to a) pass on our experiences of first time Drupal design & dev and b) get to grips with some of the trickier Drupal underpinnings in a workshop-y environment. Can I clarify exactly how you envisage the 'sessions' to pan out? Are we looking to offer a range of design/dev services to small NGOs over a period of time or offer a practical workshop environment to in-house NGO teams? I'd imagine these would need to be regular meet ups (once a month say) to keep the momentum going. We aren't based in London but would be happy to make the commitment to the meetings as long as we had a set of clearly defined objectives. Sorry for all the questions. Monday is 'question everything' day. ;-)

I'm up for it. I'm about to

I'm up for it. I'm about to launch the new website for my Church and a lot has gone into it, but I need more insights. I answer to God.

I'm in

I'm up for this too. I run a drupal agency that works with NGOs. Would be a great chance to help out some of the smaller organisations!

Me also

I'm also interested in this. New to Drupal and I'm working on a charity website, but have a good sense/experience in user experience. Circulate any tentative dates. John www.OneDiffernence.org

Transition Towns movement

Hi all, this sounds like an excellent idea; count us in :) I'm the web co-ordinator for http://www.transitiontowns.org and we're moving from early days wiki action onto Drupal over the course of the next few months. I'm not quite sure how we'd fit into your event model as we're working on our IA and community structures and web hosting etc. right now, but our ambition is very closely aligned to your outline above - even if we're not the ideal NGO to work on directly, we'd be happy to share experiences/IA/briefs/lessons learnt etc. - from - Ed

Great idea, and kudos for highlighting the maintenance bit! I'm up for contributing as consultant/developer. I'm currently already volunteering/working in this capacity for a couple of charities/non-profits. Farez Redkey | Drupal development redkeydigital.com

I can only write this while

I can only write this while my son is taking a nap so rather briefly... First of all thank you very much for your interest and offers! On organising the session - I'm thinking about making this as unorganised (not disorganised) as possible. I don't want to devide people into groups but would like to encourage people to move around and work with organisations of your interest. If you are new to drupal you might want to wander around and find teams that are doing what you are wanting to learn. I envisage this meetup to be not only useful from organisations' perspective, but also a place for web people to get together, get connected, have fun and learn from each other. So let's trynot to make it too formal and structured. In order to utilise the resource we have, I will create a list of people with different skills (IA, developer, designer, themed etc.) so it will be easier to match the organisations with people. But people should not be obliged to help anyone. I would also like to make this into a regular thing so if we devide people into teams and none of the volunteers turn up, the organisation is screwed. So let's make it flexible and see how it works. Ok, my son's still sleeping but it's bloody hard writing this on my iPhone so better go. Thanks again everyone and will update you soon with the status and mre detailed plans (and possibly some questions) mori

Can help with that

Hiya, as well as doing the Transition Towns web stuff I also design and facilitate events; brainstorms, innovation work, collaboration stuff. More on some of this here: http://www.edmitchell.co.uk/blog/category/eve... . I'm very keen on how to use the web to augment them too. Am happy to help with design advice etc. if you'd like that?
gaygazz's picture

I'm up for it, would like to help

Good with content and architecture, can do some development but not heavy duty coding.

Very relevant

I'm doing pretty much this sort of work for a small/medium sized NGO, and would like to be involved - can contribute to most aspects of web development apart from serious coding. Only caveat is that I'll be out of the country for the first half of November - so depending on when this takes place, I may not be able to attend.

Update

Hi everyone, Sorry for the silence. I have been sick for the past week. Just posting an update to let you know I've been moving things forward slowly but surely.

Venue:

I've had two offers and have sent them questions on the size, available dates etc.

Date:

Let's decide by poll when we have the venue.

Application:

So far I've received 8 applications from NGOs / individuals with a mission (thanks!). Here's a very brief summary of what they are after. They need some help with: - setting up a Drupal site for public - setting up a Drupal site for intranet - setting up CiviCRM - learning how to use Drupal - learning Drupal development / maintenance best practice (and also the second comment of this thread mentioned about redesign) Some of you mentioned in the comment you do not have much coding skills, but considering the maintainability of the site, we should avoid heavy customisation as much as possible. Instead we should make the best use of good contrib modules. This allows easier upgrade in the future too :) I think I will close the application temporarily when the number of applicants reach to 10. That's it for now. Any comments / feedbacks / offers will be highly appreciated!

This is a great idea...

I'd be delighted to help when and where I can, and will be attending in November. Pete Sonderskov

Drupal for Intranet in NGOs

Hi guys, sounds like a great idea. i would be happy to help out with the ideas on how to implement Open Atrium http://openatrium.com/ as an Intranet in small NGOs to plan and implement projects/collaborations with different groups. locations, etc. Any new info on the date and place? all the best, jan

Can I help

Hi, Really impressed by your activity. I can offer my services as a Project Manager to help organise work. Also I can offer some coding time from my staff to help kick projects off.
dokumori's picture

Let's decide the date!

Sorry again for the silence. I've been trying to find a venue but no luck :(
If all the organisations and volunteers come, there will be nearly (or over) 30 of us and I have not been able to find a venue that would accommodate this number of people apart from Royal Festival Hall. markspall has kinldly offered his office space for this event, but he can have up to 15 people.

I'll keep looking for a better venue, but let's assume we'll be having it at RFH for now.

I think it's important to decide the date rather quickly. ([removed] gah, markups are not working...) Robert just fixed the issue so I'll set up a form here at drupal.org.uk later today.

Looking forward to the next one.

Thanks again for coming

Thanks again for coming everyone! Because of the extra rubbish weather some people couldn't make it but it somehow worked out. I hope everyone had fun / found it useful (I did!).

Just posted a blog about the event: http://diasporan.net/content/practical-drupal-small-ngos

The next one will probably be on the 4th of December. I'll post a notice soon!

Thanks from Nightline

Hi Mori, Robert and mysty

Thanks a millon for the event. We found it very useful to discuss our issues. Thanks to the experts we and came away with facts, several actions and clearer idea of how to move forward.

I agree that a better venue than Festival Hal is needed but it was ok on the night.

Cheers

James
